Ritual Stories
My intimate relationship with a city lies in confronting different comfort zones- by performing personal rituals. In San Francisco, one of them is staying at the Green Tortoise Hostel and waking up early in the morning to get a view of Telegraph Hill. At Real Time Space I was asked to create a documentation of my 10-day curatorial residency in Oakland and San Francisco. In this condensed period, I decided to do a survey to get to know the local artists or residents in a short amount of time, but also to break the ice. Inspired by a comment that Emma Spertus (RTS) had made after observing the numerous rituals that I instinctively act out, I was curious to know what others’ rituals were. I asked 10 people in the Bay area, most of them were either artists affiliated with RTS or part of the art scene. I came to realize that every person performs some sort of ritual in order to be grounded, and naturally as a basic human behavior.
