JULY/AUGUST 2014 RESIDENT

RTS would like to welcome our July/August resident, Becky Alprin, an artist based in Oakland. Alprin’s process involves the languages of architectural model making and topographic mapping, both of which are simplified ways to depict complex forms of great scale. These reductive languages make vast things comprehensible and reveal patterns, lending the perspective of an archeologist in the distant future. Blended with geologic concepts deployed as metaphor, Alprin creates landscapes and cityscapes of indeterminate health set in ambiguous time.

During her residency at RTS, Alprin plans to continue work on the ongoing Cross Section Map series. For this series, Alprin has built lexicons of shapes that become the bits and fragments from which she assembles environments. These environments represent what she imagines would be seen if a swath of land was cut away to reveal the cross section of a landfill, a reclamation zone, or what it might look like if the world in front of our eyes was dismantled into its constituent parts. Pulled apart into fragments and then remade into new worlds, these landscapes examine the human condition through the fragility of the built environment, and through the lens of 2-dimensional design, in which positive and negative shapes may be interpreted in poetic terms.

APRIL/MAY 2014 RESIDENT

 

RTS would like to welcome our April resident, Sofía Córdova, an artist based in Emeryville. As part of her RTS Residency, Córdova is working on an ongoing installation project, ¡Auxilio! ¡Socorro! (working title), that combines video, performance and two-dimensional work exploring science fiction, pop music, map making, and obsessive collecting to describe an imagined future.

The narrative of ¡Auxilio! ¡Socorro! revolves around a suite of original songs that refer to life in the future where the conditions of our planet, as we know them today, have deteriorated and become significantly altered by unnamed events. These songs are reworked into experimental compositions to form a soundtrack to a group of videos titled They Held Dances On The Graves Of Those Who Died In The Terror that document our lost “past”. Accompanying the videos is a series of redacted images titled The Kingdom is Me, created from magazine and newspapers clippings whose content has been edited out with black paint.

During her residency at RTS, Córdova plans to expand on this installation through a new video/performance work produced in two acts. Act 1 of the performance reinterprets popular songs from our “past” (based on our cultural present) in the tradition of the troubadour or griot, using known melodies to relay the news of the day. Act 2 employs amateur divination to write lyrics for the performance – a nod to Philip K Dick’s strategy for writing The Man in the High Castle.

Becca Albee spent January at RTS going to archives, taking photographs, and walking– seeking the locations of the counter-narrative to Joan Lowell‘s autobiography. She also worked on a project initiated by a visit to Hilaire Hiler’s Prismatarium at the Aquatic Park Bathhouse, color counseling, and Radical Feminist Therapy.

RTS is excited to welcome Ross Meckfessel as the NOV/DEC resident. Working mainly in analog 16mm film, Ross’ recent films utilize documentary aesthetics, appropriated text, pop music and voice-overs to create fragmented narratives that attempt to undermine the authority of remembrance and documentation. In addition to editing a number of films in progress, Ross will also be shooting and editing a new film inspired by karaoke, Millennial culture, and Ingrid Bergman while working on a photo and film series inspired by magic iconography.

FROM AMY YAO (A VISUAL AND TEXTUAL SUMMARY OF HER OCTOBER RTS RESIDENCY):

My arrival to RTS was delayed by a few days thanks to my siamese cat Sesame’s sudden fear of everything. Luckily she is now back to normal again. She made me very worried — she would pop straight up in the air for no reason, hit her head on the bed frame, scramble away suddenly, sniff around like something was going to attack her. During my stay at RTS, I visited Bolinas to surf the Patch many times – once with studio mates Joel and Steven. I indulged on locally farmed and scavenged fresh produce at Berkeley Bowl. I attended a Public School session on the subject of Friendship where we read Plato’s Lysis. Holiday season was in full swing. Jack-o-laterns were out.

One evening I had dinner at a japanese restaurant called B-dama. It is a small place with a small “sushi bar” and a few tables. I was a party of one this night. I ended up sitting next to a man who everyone in the restaurant seemed to know and respect. He dressed in an asian 80’s style with a houndstooth jacket, thick shoulder pads, permed hair. He was a small man… maybe as tall as I am and I am small. We spoke briefly, but the noise was loud in the restaurant so it was impossible to hear everything he said. He told me he used to own a restaurant. He moved to CA from Japan.

During my final week in the Bay, David came to visit me. We took a short trip to Bolinas and stayed overnight, two evenings. We drove up to Point Reyes, the very tip of it where there’s cattle, deserted beaches, a lighthouse, elk and not much else. It seemed sharky. On the way up, we had an oyster feast with champagne at Hog Island. There’s a small rock in the inlet directly in front of several bbq grills and the rock slightly resembles a cute hog. This must be why “Hog Island”.

We surfed the Patch twice. The waves were very small and slow moving. No one else was surfing. The color of the water at the Patch reminds me of chocolate milk. As we walked along an inlet harbor in town, I saw an SUV pull up and out comes the same man I saw at B-dama, wearing the same outfit.

During RTS, I was able to develop the prototype for the new group of fan sculptures. I’m still working on it as it is very complicated to make such a thin fiberglass object. The epoxy resin I used was making me allergic so now I switched back to polyester resin. This all culminated in a party and show at Joel Dean’s Important Projects which is a gallery in the attic of a craftsman style home he rents. Evidently there are many car break-ins there. Joel and his roommates were very fun and had great Halloween costumes. They also entertained my obsession with Tiki Bars by going with me to the Kona Club. Regularly, the Kona Club seems empty. On this night it was packed with party people wearing costumes. The volcano spewed colored fog and people were dressed as sexy pirates, etc.

RTS welcomes Ron Ewert, a visual artist and co-director of The Hills Esthetic Center in Chicago Illinois.  Ron is currently working on a never-ending series of black on white paintings of doodles, thumbnail sketches, preliminary drawings and graphic leftovers to be exhibited salon style or any-style, with or without a soundtrack, as an accumulative practice which is definitively not hoarding and may or may not be pathological.  While in Oakland, Ron will be studying the evolution of the Major League Baseball postseason, professional football players’ body language, the pros and cons of medium, large and extra-large art objects, and the displacement of subjectivity in abstract painting.

RTS is happy to welcome Brooklyn based artist Maliea Croy for the month of August. While at RTS Croy will work on an exploration in diminishing vision (literally).  How to show how something transforms, is mistaken for something else, becomes invisible, fades away.  She is questioning the definitive nature of things as nothing looks the same as it used to.  Using language to describe objects, objects to describe people, etc. She has begun to feel a little more flexibility in the purpose of things.

RTS is excited for our 20th resident Erika Lynne Hanson. Hanson visits Oakland from Kansas City but will move to Phoenix shortly after her time with us. Hanson while at RTS will work with the notion of landscape which is inherently a view that can never be reached, she will begin by exploring the possibilities for understanding these distant scapes. Using national parks webcams as a source material, Hanson is investigating the potential for the images to offer unexpected information once being distilled through various processes and media, resulting forms range from video to bead work to installation.

RTS is happy to welcome André and Evan Lenox a.k.a. The Lenox Twins a.k.a. Lenox-Lenox as the June Artists in Residence. André and Evan operate within a collaborative mindset as a means to reinforce discontentment with an individual’s role in society, and distress regarding how to reinstate a sense of self. Lenox-Lenox will present a talk about their work in June as part of the RTS Talks series, which are free and open to the public. The Twins’ residency at RTS will culminate with an exhibition at Important Projects on June 28^th.

Spring at RTS has been particularly sweet this year with the addition of April/May resident artist Kait Mooney. Mooney has been working on a new series of sculptural works that use spatial and material illegibility in relation to body-based and architectural elements.  Mooney will present a talk about her work on May 28th at 7:30pm as part of the RTS Talks series, which are free and open to the public.
