April 06, 2017
RTS is happy to welcome March/April Small Press Traffic writer in residence Emji Spero!
Emji Spero is a performance artist and writer living in Oakland, California. They are an editor at Timeless, Infinite Light and the author of almost any shit will do. They are currently working on Exhaustion: A Retching, a dry lyric essay that documents the affective weight of the accumulated, subthreshold violences, which daily permeate a non-binary body in transition. Code-switching between poetry and essay, Spero explores Jose Muñoz’s notion that “utopia exists in the quotidian.”

MARCH/APRIL Artist In Residence: Cassie Thornton
March 27, 2017
RTS is excited to welcome our March/April artist in residence, Cassie Thornton.
It is a normal day, everyone is bored, ev- erything good seems impossible. A small white woman has a tantrum in your school’s cafeteria about her for-pro t education at a “public institution,” the way her school has colonized the city and her zero-sum future of shallow work, unpayable debt and con- stant eviction. It is Cassie Thornton, or one of her agents. Cassie produces perversely hard-hitting social situations that result in unexpected transformations on the streets, in workplaces, and at schools. Thornton stops time to summon up the unknown unknowns that reside in the silences between people, institutions, and economies. Cassie Thornton is a feminist economist and artist who uses dance, writing, visual art, hypnosis, experimental research, tours and radio to reveal debt as a source of solidarity.

Archiving Your Personal and Organizational Legacy: A Best Practices Workshop with Lexa Walsh
January 15, 2017
Save the date for an archiving workshop with current artist in residence, Lexa Walsh! Join us on Jan 25th at 7pm!
Archiving Your Personal and Organizational Legacy: A Best Practices Workshop is a hands-on brainstorming and resource sharing workshop among artists and administrators to identify values and practices for archiving your personal and organizational legacies. How do artists and institutions take responsibility for archiving their practices in diverse formats so they can create a strong legacy to be understood and appreciated by contemporary and future audiences? What do we keep, and how do we store it? How do they honor all stakeholders? What about the embarrassing stuff? Participants hear about Walsh’s field research then gather in groups with a proposition of a future archive-based exhibition. By the end of the two-hour workshop, we will gather and share our long lists so we can take action.
Lexa Walsh is an artist and archivist based in Oakland, CA. She has worked directly with the archives of Oakland Museum of California for the shows We/customize and Twenty Years of Dias de los Muertos. She organized the archives and curated Intersection for the Arts’ 50 Year Anniversary Archive Show. Her de Young Artist Fellowship project, Mapping the Archive, was based on extensive research, site visits and interviews, including organizing Guillermo Gomez-Pena’s archives. She has presented workshops about archiving at the Open Engagement Conference, the Alliance of Artist Communities Conference, and at California College of the Arts.

NOV/DEC Small Press Traffic Resident: Arisa White
November 03, 2016
RTS is excited to welcome our Nov/Dec Small Press Traffic resident, Arisa White!
Cave Canem fellow Arisa White received her MFA from UMass, Amherst, and is the author of Black Pearl, Post Pardon, Hurrah’s Nest, and A Penny Saved. She teaches in the low-residency BFA program at Goddard College and is a lecturer at San Francisco State University. She will be the distinguished visiting writer in residence at Saint Mary’s College of California in Spring 2017. You’re the Most Beautiful Thing that Happened is her newest collection from Augury Books.
During her residency at Real Time and Space, Arisa will be working to develop characters and setting for “She: A Sister Outsider’s Heroine’s Journey.” “She” incorporates poetry, dramatic and lyric writing to create a poetic narrative that weaves myth, cultural history, ecology, and biography to tell a tale of living as a queer, black woman during the Great Recession. Lake Merritt in Oakland serves as the setting for “She,” and as the main character completes the 10 stages of the heroine’s journey, she interrogates the social ecology impacting her ability to mine and integrate the terrains of her own femininity.

RTS Talks: Mitzi Pederson and Emily Yamauchi
October 12, 2016
RTS is excited to host talks by current resident Mitzi Pederson and Small Press Traffic resident Emily Yamauchi! Join us on October 30th at 2pm!
Mitzi Pederson’s sculptures employ standard, prefabricated materials such as plywood, tulle, and concrete. The treatment and assembly rely on tension, endurance, vulnerability, and chance to allow for transformation. These compositions depend on the relationships established between the materials and her sense that there may be mysteries internal to them. The result concerns the occupation of space and the limits of form.
Emily Yamauchi is a writer and artist in Oakland, California by way of New Jersey, which some say is appropriate–who knows. She received her MFA in Creative Writing from Saint Mary’s College of California. She writes fiction, comics, and graphic novels. Currently she is writing a novel and a graphic memoir. When she’s not writing or experimenting with projects fusing words/image/music, she’s teaching the young’uns around the Bay Area and working as a legal writer for immigration law. As a Hedgebrook and VONA/Voices alum and Oakland resident of 15 years, she is always looking to elevate and celebrate community and marginalized voices.
